[ Jesse just smiles, picking up on Nacho's excitable vibes. They're kind of contagious and that coupled with the fact that he's just happy to actually get out of the house and do something other than work and sleep means Jesse's face lights up, too. ]
Okay. Well, uh...first off you're gonna want to figure out what foot you lead with. It's not always gonna be your dominant side that feels most comfortable, so just like. Try both out and see what feels better. Just plant one food towards the front of your board and push off with your back foot. When you put both feet on you're gonna want to pivot that front foot so they're both facing to the side.
[ Jesse explains, feeling himself ramble a little. He rubs at the back of his neck, an almost bashful expression coming over him. He's so used to everyone trying to teach him how to do shit that it feels kind of nice to fill the instructor role for once. ]
You'll wanna get used to just getting on and off the board, pushing off, and going in a straight line before you try anything fancy. Turning's pretty easy once you get your balance down. You just kinda put more pressure towards your heels or your toes--whichever's towards the way you wanna turn...
[ Jesse puts his board down, skating a straight line, then looping around to return to where Nacho is. ]
[ Nacho often suffers from the opposite problem as Jesse - nobody really seems interested in teaching him anything, or even telling him anything. Except for Mike. But aside from Mike, people mostly seem interested in giving him what sometimes feel to Nacho like near-impossible tasks and then telling him to just "figure it out". Maybe he should be glad they have faith in his abilities... but it doesn't always feel to Nacho like they have faith in him. Truth is, sometimes it just makes him feel expendable. Like he's more of a tool than a person, not worth protecting or even educating.
Maybe that's why he likes being around Jesse. Nacho never feels like anybody is expendable to Jesse. And it's nice to have somebody being willing to teach him how to do something for once, instead of just expecting him to figure shit out on his own. He listens, noting the bashful expression with a hint of internal amusement and maybe (platonic) affection, although he doesn't really show it. Nacho just listens, and nods.
Nacho would rather listen than talk most of the time anyway.
Jesse makes it sound pretty simple, and Jesse makes it look pretty simple too. Jesse's movements are fluid and easy, and it seems simple enough. So Nacho confidently drops the board down on the ground and gets on, holding his arms out a little unsteadily to try and get his balance, feeling stupid as he does it. Okay. See what foot feels better. He can do that. He tries to push off with the other foot, and...
And then, immediately, there's a loud clattering sound as the board goes flying out from underneath him and he immediately falls the second he tries to push off, smacking his tailbone on the hard ground. ]
[ Jesse's always been the type to give everyone an equal opportunity. Generally speaking, he gives you the benefit of the doubt until you prove him wrong, even if a fucked up reputation follows you. Jesse prefers to figure people out on his own accord. It's mostly because he is too often not given that chance. Girls in high school whose parents wouldn't let their daughters within fifty feet of him, neighbors who grumbled when finding out he was moving into his aunt's house. If any of them had actually taken the opportunity to get to know him, they likely wouldn't have treated him the way they did. But a lot of people rely on word of mouth over their own experience.
It works that Nacho's more of a listener than a talker, because it's not often that Jesse can keep his mouth shut, even when it's in his better interest to do so. Still, he's used to being told to shut up on a regular basis, so he's constantly waiting for the shoe to drop whenever he feels himself rambling on for too long.
Jesse's been skating since he was a kid and, even though it's been a long time since he's done this, it's akin to riding a bike. Your body doesn't forget, even if you need a little time to get your skill level back up to where it once had been. He steps aside to clear a path for Nacho, folding his arms across his chest as he watches him put the board down and step on. He finds himself holding his breath a little as Nacho steps on and tries to propel himself forward.
He claps a hand over his mouth when Nacho falls on his ass, jogging after the passengerless board to stop from rolling away. He walks back over to Nacho and holds a hand out to help him up, biting the inside of his cheek to keep from smiling too much or laughing. He isn't trying to make fun of the guy or discourage him from learning, but it did look a little hilarious. ]
You good, yo? Don't worry, I ate it plenty when I was first learning. Maybe, uh...maybe give the other foot a try, huh? Spread your feet apart a little more ti give yourself a solid base and bend your knees a little to lower your center of gravity. Then it won't fly out from under you so easy.
[ He suggests, grabbing the board to hand it off to Nacho once he's back on his feet. ]
Go ahead, try again. And loosen up a little, man. You look like you got a stick up your ass.
[ Nacho is uninterested in telling Jesse to shut up; he actively enjoys listening to Jesse talk. His enthusiasm. His love for the sport. Jesse's so free, while Nacho always feels constrained. Nacho is happy to stand there, hands crossed in front of himself, and just listen to Jesse talk.
Too bad all that listening didn't actually help him learn to skate better, though. Nacho winces as he lays on the ground. His tailbone is a little bruised, but he's not seriously hurt.
Except for his pride, anyway.
It's not like Jesse didn't warn him though. So Nacho can't be mad. He's still expecting mockery though, and he's pleasantly surprised when Jesse doesn't say anything mean and instead offers a hand to help him. He can see Jesse smiling a little, and something about it makes Nacho smile back when he reaches out to grab Jesse's hand to let Jesse pull him up. He stretches, leaning back and rubbing his rear end where his tailbone slammed into the hard concrete, when Jesse tells him he looks like he's got a stick up his ass.
He gives Jesse a gentle, playful shove, not hard enough to do any real damage or actually knock Jesse off balance. ]
Shut up. [ Great comeback, Nacho. Good job. But his tone is playful and light, not angry. Look, he knows he probably looked ridiculous, but that doesn't mean he's just going to sit there'd take it.
Okay. Other foot. He can do this. Nacho takes a deep breath. Loose. He can be loose! He can do this!
...or maybe not? Watching Nacho try to be loose is downright comical, actually. He's fluid and powerful in his physicality, not clumsy, but there's always something practiced and composed about his movements, so watching him, both arms out, wobbling on the skateboard, is a sight to see. He looks over at Jesse, hopefully, for approval. ]
[ Jesse and his friends like to mess around and rib each other like a lot of people do, but there's a time and a place for it, and it feels like ragging on Nacho for falling on his ass might be an asshole move. Plus, he's actually stoked to be able to get out and do something and forget about all the stressful shit going on in his life. It's been forever since he just went and did something normal, especially now with his friends being roped into the business as his street-level salesmen. It feels like his entire life is caught up in Mr. White and his quest to make money. There's rarely an opportunity for an honest to god break.
Jesse just laughs it off when Nacho gives him a playful shove and tells him to shut up. The grin stays plastered on his face even as the laugh dies in the air. He watches Nacho start to try again, but sees his foot placement's all wrong. Instead of just letting him fall again, Jesse steps up and crouches down, wrapping his hands around Nacho's ankle and guiding his foot gently into a better position. ]
Like this. Yeah, that's spaced a little better.
[ Jesse stands up, brushing the grit off of the knees of his jeans. He steps back a few feet to watch from a safe distance, giving Nacho a little room. If he can't get it down, he'll step in and let Nacho use him for balance until he's feeling a little more confident, but he wants to see what he can do on his own first. ]
When you push off, don't scramble to get your foot back on the board. Just like, gently get it back on there. You'll throw your balance if you rush. Gotta stay loose and easy. Go with the flow, yo.
[ Slightly embarrassingly, Nacho flails a little when Jesse corrects his footing. His arms shoot out to the side and he moves them in circles for a second or two before he manages to get his bearings again. But he doesn't fight Jesse, allowing Jesse to correct his footing until he realizes that... hey, yeah! That does feel more stable.
The increased feelings of stability engender relief and confidence, and it helps to think Jesse is watching out for him and will make sure he doesn't do anything too stupid. He looks at Jesse for confirmation that he's doing it right, mixed with a hint of gratitude for not just letting him fall. ]
Like that? Okay... [ Deep breath. He looks down at his feet. Then, back at Jesse. A shy, but happy, smile emerges. ] Thanks, man. Appreciate the help.
[ When Jesse steps back, Nacho feels a sense of unease, and he fights his instinct to read out to grab Jesse for balance. But no. He's not a fucking pussy. He can do this on his own. Or at least, he'll try to do it on his own. He wants to cling to Jesse for support, but he's not going to.
He does try very hard to listen to Jesse's words, though. Gentle. Don't scramble. Okay. He can do that.
Gentle motions come more easily to Nacho anyway; He takes a deep breath and very carefully pushes off. The board rolls. It's a little wobbly, and there's a moment of precariousness while Nacho slowly places his foot back on the board. There's no guarantee he'll make it, but somehow Nacho is able to gently, slowly guide the board about five or six feet.
It might not be much of an accomplishment, but Nacho is grinning as wide as he ever does when the board bumps lightly to a stop. Nacho slowly hops down, looking back over at Jesse with his exhilarated (for Nacho, anyway) expression. ]
